Since the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom “Bukubuku-cha (bubble tea)” has been known as a lucky omen when traveling. AKESHINO was established in order to preserve, convey and spread Okinawa’s only tea ceremony. Bukubuku-cha is made by brewing roasted brown rice in Okinawa’s hard mineral-rich water, which creates a rich white foam on top of the tea.
It is recorded that the tea, served with the foam, was historically presented to Chinese envoys called Sapposhi. As well as performing a tea ceremony on request, AKESHINO also performs the tea ceremony as part of a stage performance together with other artists of traditional Okinawan performing arts. They participate in the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival and also travel to other countries to promote the tradition, including the U.S. and China.
